The Furyondy Military

The Greyhawk Wars (582cy-584cy) were very costly to the Armies of Furyondy. Many veteran soldiers were killed or are missing in action. Under the Grand Marshal Baron Jemian, chosen by King Belvor IV to unite the provinces military forces, the Furyondy Military has slowly rebuilt, with a few minor setbacks. At the same time King Belvor strives to bring the nation’s soldiers under a single banner. Despite this inter-region bickering and rivalry continues in the rank and file. Nearly fifty thousand soldiers now serve the kingdom awaiting another full-scale war with Iuz. This includes some mercenaries and adventurers. Despite this, the vast majority of the army is still lacking many experienced veterans.

Furyondy has traditionally had a strong military base, primarily sponsored by the noble houses, each of which maintains a standing army. Those of the northern lords are considerable, some approaching 8000 strong while those in the south may be as few as 1500. By feudal right, however, King Belvor IV can call on these armies as long as he helps to support them financially if he uses their services longer than two months. Because of this tradition, the typical tour of duty for a private is about two months of time. The King may support more seasoned soldiers (higher ranking) for longer periods of time, and the national army stands over twenty thousand, roughly equal to that supplied by the lords. There are many regions that support “specialized” troops, such as the Bootmen of the Reach or the Cavalry of Littleberg and the March.

Military Branches

The Furyondy Military is divided up into three major branches: Infantry, Cavalry and Naval.

Infantry: The Infantry is comprised largely of mercenaries, peasant levies and adventurers. Their main purpose is to serve as infantry, archers, and scouts during war. During peacetime or breaks in the war with Iuz, the Infantry helps rebuild damaged structures and serves as Militia in the Northern provinces. Many of the Warmasters of the kingdom serve within the infantry and occasionally the infantry does receive support from the Mage Council.

Cavalry: The Furyondy Cavalry is comprised largely of mercenaries and adventurers; while all knights are members of the cavalry their overall numbers are very small compared to the whole. Their main purpose is to support the infantry troops during war. During peacetime or breaks in the war with Iuz, the cavalry helps rebuild damaged structures and serves as Militia in the Northern provinces. The cavalry also supports the Mail Riders during wartime. The cavalry is led primarily by the Knights of Furyondy.

Naval (The Furyondy Royal Navy): The Furyondy Royal Navy is the most elite navy in the Flanaess, with its primary base in Willip. The navy consists of eight great galleons, thirty caravels, and fifty other assorted river and sea vessels that patrol the Nyr Dyv and trade rivers of Furyondy keeping them free from dangers.

Rules of Conduct

Members of all branches of the Furyondy military must always follow these rules of Conduct.
